The Challenge
Cassils’ twelve-hour performance transmitted words into the night sky using powerful light beams and Morse code. A public audience needed a way to read the messages through their own phones as the light pulses appeared.
Our Role
Heroic served as Digital Director and Producing Partner, developing the camera detection algorithms and translation interface. Cassils created the performance with lighting artist Christopher Kuhl; Renata Azevedo Moreira curated it for Nuit Blanche.
What We Delivered
- Free iOS and Android apps for the performance.
- Camera detection algorithms that read Morse code light pulses.
- An interface that translated the detected pulses into words on screen in real time.
The Result
The app connected the performance’s light signals to readable messages on participants’ phones. The performance received coverage from Artforum and CBC.
